At the heart of it this is a story of a girl who is lonely, left out, and struggling to come to terms with why her mother left. She is also struggling with her identity and her crush on another girl at school. Their friendship and the revelation of what happened with her mother were well told.
I struggle with some of the religious stereotypes and I felt like the teacher and girls' behavior was awful and surprised that the principal did not address it - especially since she was in Caroline's corner.
