Courage for Beginners

Mysti Murphy is an observer of life.  There are so many things she can't do because of her mom's condition which no one talks about.  Her mom has agoraphobia and dad does everything - grocery shopping, errands but when dad has an accident and is in the hospital for months things fall apart.  In addition her best friend has decided to change his image and does a "social experiment" with her.  As time moves on Mysti realizes that she is going to need to make some changes for her family and for her own social life.

I really enjoyed this one.  The dynamics with the agoraphobia was interesting.  I found it a bit hard to believe that there was no follow up from the hospital when no one came to visit the dad especially in light of the fact that the family started running out of food and basics.  Social work???  Or was there more going on behind the scenes with mom refusing help?  Unfortunately I think some of my students will relate to this book - maybe not with the specific condition but with some neglect.
