Poems in the Attic
A young girl finds poems written by her mother who was an army brat. Her mother's poems tell of different places she lived all over the world. The girl reponds or reacts to each poem with one of her own and in the end assembles her mother's poems and her own into a book. The narrator's poems are free verse and the mother's are Tanka.
I liked how Nikki Grimes approached this. It is an interesting glimpse into the life of an Army brat and in different cultures. The girl's responses are unique as well. I also like how Grimes used 2 types of poetry.
Of the 3 poetry books I read today, this was my favorite.
