Catch You Later, Traitor
Pete's life is changed when he finds himself in the middle of an FBI investigation. His father, is suspected of being a communist and in the 1950s that was not a good thing. With an FBI agent trying to find out what he knows, friends abandoning him, suspicious neighbors, and secrets he does not understand Pete is confused. Taking on the role of Sam Spade, Pete tries to figure everything out without succombing to the paranoia around him and without turning on his own family.
I felt Avi did a good job of capturing the confusion of the time and through his dad's experiences, explaining the actions of many Americans. Because it was presented as a mystery it might hold more appeal for readers than straight historical fiction.
