Pathfinder
I have never read any of the Septimus Heap books. This new series takes place 7 years after the original series. While there were some references to events from the original series I didn't really have trouble understanding and enjoying this book.
Alice Tod is a pathfinder. On her twelfth birthday she finds out what that really means. Shortly after her dad disappears and she is left with her stepmother. Tod soon finds herself ensnared in a weird plot to capture her and other pathfinders for something that doesn't become clear until the very end of the book. Throughout the story Tod meets characters from the original series - Septimus and others - as well as characters from her village. The story had a lot of action and some good twists and turns. I enjoyed the book. My usual complaints - length and sequel - while still issues were not too bad. The length was 460 pages but it read quickly with short chapters and the book itself is shorter than most. While the ending did leave the villain on the loose it wasn't as bad as some sequel endings. For fans of the Septimus Heap series this will be a good continuation. I also enjoyed it.
