The Night Gardener and Strike

When two orphans, Molly and Kip, are given the chance to work for a wealthy family they jump at the chance.  But there are strange things going on there and surrounding villagers tell them to avoid the place.  The family seems to be getting sicker by the day, the all seem obsessed with certain possessions, and there is a mysterious night man who wanders the halls.  In addition, there is the tree. Can Molly and Kip maintain their own values and avoid being caught up in the greed?

I really enjoyed this book.  Deliciously creepy...

I can appreciate this book from the viewpoint that it was well researched and had a lot of information about migrant workers in the 1960s and Caesar Chavez.

That being said, unless students were interested in this topic or it was part of their curriculum I do not see them picking this up to read.  At least not the students at my school....maybe where this is a more prevalent part of the culture...
