The Young World
In this dystopian book all the adults and all the children have died - leaving only teenagers who will die when they reach adulthood. The book takes place in New York City where various groups are surviving by arming themselves, scavenging, and then living like the know they are going to die - YOLO.
The Washington Square Tribe is led by Jefferson after his older brother Washington, the former leader dies of the sickness. When his group finds out information about the sickness they decide to go across NYC to a secret facility to find a cure. But they have to get through the territory of many other groups, animals who've escaped from the zoo, and the subway to get there.
I enjoyed the book actually even though there is no way it will be eligible for the MSBA committee. I felt that the last few chapters were rushed and confusing but can see that it is only the first book in an intended trilogy.
So final word...good but disturbing and was left hanging....
