I really enjoyed this book. At the beginning of 8th grade Jesse and her classmates are given an assignment to pick a Superhero to study all year and then debate at the end of the year with others in the class to see who wins the Superhero Slam. This book is Jesse's diary as she embarks on her discovery of Batgirl. Along the way she trains in a way Batgirl would and writes to many modern day heroes to get their take on what it takes to be a hero. Throughout the year there is friend drama and other issues related to 8th grade but for the most part this is Jesse's voice and discovery.
I think students will enjoy the ever popular diary format and the real interviews can be stepping stones to research or similar projects.
