Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom
So this book won an award today - Siebert Honor I believe - and I had never heard of it and no one on MSBA had read it. I was able to get it at ALA Midwinter at the Random / Penguin House display (thanks guys). As I looked at it I wondered why this book over others in recent years about Freedom Summer, etc? I think it was the voice that sold me. Lynda Blackmon Lowery was there, she turned 15 on the march, and her voice comes through. Her innocence, her fear, her courage. Well done and more accessible than others for our younger readers. The mix of illustration and photograph wasn't my favorite...
