I had no idea that a former slave became a US representative 10 years after the Civil War. Amazing truly...especially in light of how things turnedout worse and it took so long for African Americans to get back that kind of power and roles in government.
That being said, I felt that the text was too sparse in someplaces and was either confusing (how did he earn his emancipation?) or jumped too quickly (Justice of the Peace to Mississippi representative).I would actually love to see a longer text about his life.
