I finished 2 books so far today...getting to the end of the MSBA shortlist...
Under the Egg was a great mystery. When Theodora's grandfather is dying her tells her to look under the egg for a letter and a treasure. Theodora is in dire straits...her mother is unable to care for herself let alone Theodora and bills are coming due. Theodora finally stumbles upon the fact that the egg painting she has seen for her whole life above the fireplaces actually has been painted over another painting that looks old. Could it be as she suspects - a Raphael? Does that mean her grandfather stole it? With the help of a new friend, Bodhi, Theodora searches museums, libraries, old army records, and the painting itself to unravel a mystery that is 100s of years old.
I loved how the book brought in WWII, the Monuments Men, the Holocaust, and art history. This was quite enjoyable and didn't drag.
Outside the Box was a fun book of poems. I have heard people say they are too Shel Silversteinish but if it causes my students to pick up the book then so be it. I thought the poems were fun and kid friendly.
