I love when I find out about historical events that I had never heard of before. This book follows the events of about 76 slaves who attempted to escape from Washington D.C on the Pearl. The ship was captured and many of the recovered slaves were sold south. The 2 girls that the story centered around were eventually ransomed and educated.
While I thought the topic was interesting I did not find the writing as engaging as I would have liked. This would probably be a good book for the middle grades who are studying slavery and the Civil War.
