The Actual and Truthful Adventures of Becky Thatcher
This book was a lot of fun. Take characters from Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and change them up a bit. Add in Samuel Clemens, some no good thieves, and some great allusions and you have a winner. Becky Thatcher is a little spitfire who longs to go on adventures in memory of her brother Jon who died a year earlier. Trading in dresses for his old overalls she spits, sneaks out, and goes to the graveyard at night. The only problem is that the Pritchard Brothers are on the loose, Momma is still mourning Jon, and that Tom Sawyer is a snitch.
I loved the idea of this book and while the middle of the book dragged a bit the ending was a lot of fun. This Becky Thatcher was a hoot. The audience of the book is a bit weird for me...kids don't typically read Tom Sawyer until 8th grade but the audience for this book seems a bit younger. To fully appreciate the book I feel you need knowledge of Tom Sawyer, etc. But maybe not...we'll see how this works at my school.
