Colors of the Wind

This picture book is about George Mendoza who lost his sight when he was 15.  He can actually see lights and colors which he compares to a kaleidoscope.  When he was a teenager he started running and actually ran in the Olympics and holds the record for blind runners.  Evetually he took the advice of a priest and began painting.  His paintings are now part of a traveling exhibition.

I loved Mendoza's painting that were included in the book.  I felt that the text was sparse and maybe not as lyrical as I would have liked.  I think students could be drawn to the book by teachers as an example of a person who takes what life gives him and rises above.
