In the Shadow of Liberty
This book was quite interesting. It was a look at slavery in the US through the lens of 4 American Presidents who were slave owners and 5 of their enslaved people. The idea was to look at the dichotomy between American ideals of liberty and even some of their personal beliefs and their resistance to freeing their own slaves. By speaking about specific enslaved people the goal was to bring them out of the shadows. The book was interesting and yet I didn't find it all that successful. Unfortunately, the people still remained somewhat shadowy because there just isn't that much information about them so I found the book still focused more on the Presidents and First Ladies rather than the enslaved people. Good book and one that could initiate discussion but unfortunately the people in the shadows still remain somewhat shadowed.
