Duke by Kirby Larson
Hobie loves his dog Duke but there is a war going and Hobie feels pressured to donate Duke to the army. His dad is in the war and Hobie feels he needs to do his part. The book is told from Hobie's point of view as he struggles with his decision. We also get letters from Duke (written by his handler).
I liked the historical aspect of the book and Hobie's struggles with being at home while his dad and dog are far away. But if a student decides to pick it up based on the dog on the cover thinking it's all about the dog they may be disappointed.
Read-it though...
