The War That Saved My Life
All her life Ada has been stuck inside watching the world fromher window because her Mam is embarassed by her club foot. Mam mistreats both her children but Ada suffers the brunt of it. When the government of England decides to evacuate the children her brother Jaime is scheduled to go. But, Ada practices walking as best as she can and sneaks off with Jaime.
Once in Kent they are taken in reluctantly by Susan Smith. Their relationship is strained at first- Ada fears more mistreatment and then, when it doesn't come, she is afraid of her developing feelings.
I loved this book. Powerful, emotional, jarring at times, and hopeful. Beautiful!!!
