The Golden Braid

Rapunzel and her mother have always wandered about and never really become friends with anyone else but they have always had each other.  Her mother is very protective and often warns her of men.  When they decide to move to Hagenheim they are attacked by 2 thieves.  Fortunately a knight comes to their rescue.  That rescue causes Rapunzel to start thinking more about freedom, learning to read, and she begins to questions her mother's protectiveness.

As Rapunzel grows closer to Sir Gerek she discovers the truth about her mother and who she really is.

I enjoyed this retelling of Rapunzel.  When I started reading it I did not realize it was a Christian book.  I loved how the message of forgiveness was woven in and how the timeperiod played in beautifully.  The book is too old for my students but I would recommend it to others.

The Sword of Summer

Not gonna lie...I love Rick Riordan and what he has done for children's literature.  I love his ties to mythology which has spurred a new interest in it, I love his sarcasm and humor, and I love his chapter titles.  As one who has read and enjoyed all of his previous works I was thrilled with this. New characters (with cameos from a favorite) and Norse mythology - what's not to like.

Now...about MSBA...  Funny thing...haven't gotten a single student to read this book and it has been in the library several weeks.  For students enamoured with the other books it should be an easy sell...problem is that most of those kids are older - junior high and up. Not sure this is a good entry point for a reader and thus maybe not a good choice for Maine Student Book Award...alas...

Super Fly

This was a cute story of Eugene Fly and his best freiend Fred Flea who must battle against Cornelius "Crazy" Cockroach.  Cornelius is a bully but he becomes even worse when he accidently ingests the Ultimo 6-9000. He can only be stopped once Eugene also is exposed to the Ultimo 6-9000 and becomes Super Fly.But even then he needs the help of his sidekick, his friends, and his wit.

A fun read for our younger students.

The Dreadful Fate of Jonathan York

Oh, I loved this one so much!!!!  Mild mannered Jonathan York went for a walk one afternoon and found himself lost in a swamp with night approaching. Fortunately,he cameupon someother travellers who guided him to an inn. Unfortunately, the price for staying the night was a story. The other 3 travellers had stories to tell (hooded woman's was my favorite) but Mr. York had no story. So he was sent back into the swamp where he encountered monsters, thieves, and ultimately he came back with a story.

I would classify this as a graphic novel and I felt that it was perfect- good creep factor but not overboard, humor, and even a lesson at the end. Loved it!!!

The Boy Who Carried Bricks

Powerful, powerful true story of Alton Carter.  Alton's life was messed up.  4 siblings, all with different fathers, mom using perscription meds to cope, abusive stepfather, living with grandparents and abusive uncles, and finallyput intothe foster care system which wasn'tmuch better.  Alton tells his story very honestly and yet there is always hope and his determination to rise above the circumstances and better his life.  I can see a lotof students who would benefit from a book like this.

My one complaint is the text size and overall presentation.  It would have been better with a larger font and a bit more white space.
