Hidden Gold
This book tells the story of the Gold family in Poland during WWII. As Jews the family was in danger. The father, Lieb, made arrangements for the family to go into hiding. The father himself did not meet the family when he was supposed to and they never saw him again. The rest of the family - mother, 2 girls, and a son faced many trials and danger including a stay of over 2 years in a barn. The story was harrowing and incredible.
As a reader of many Holocaust stories I was fascinated by this account - different than most from the hesitant rescuers to the stay in the barn for over 2 years. I enjoyed reading the epilogue and finding out what happened to everyone after the war. Unfortunately though I feel like the storytelling itself, the writing could have been better - perhaps by making David the narrator and telling everything from his eyes or from one of the sisters. Parts of the book seemed disjointed to me.
For my students (grades up to 5th) this would be a hard read. For students studying WWII and the Holocaust this would be a good addition.
