This book is a companion to Three Times Lucky. In this installment Mo and Dale find themselves investigating a ghost at the Tupelo Landing Inn that Miss Lana and Grandmother Miss Lacy Thornton bought by mistake. With the town's 250 year old bash coming up it's important to interview the ghost for class, renovate the inn, and figure out why Nellie, the ghost, is still around.
I love Mo's voice. I listened to Three Times Lucky on audio and loved it. This one didn't grab me quite as much but still a fun read and romp.
March's father is a thief and has taught March all about the business. Unfortunately his dad is living under a curse that was made years ago when he stole a moonstone necklace. Two parts of the curse have come true and before March's 13th birthday the next part will come true. March knows nothing about this until his dad dies and he finds the twin sister he never knew he had. Can the twins find all the pieces of the moonstone necklace and break the curse before it kills them?
This was a good book...action, adventure, trust, loyalty, friendship. I felt like it took awhile to get going and there were some parts that lagged but overall I enjoyed it.
Can you go wrong with a Russell Freedman book really? Well researched, lots of facts, and photographs. I don't have a good history on the Civil Rights Movement so this was really interesting. What struck me is that all of this took place mere years before I was born...recent history really. The book was interesting...for me. And there is the issue...unless students are studying the Civil Rights Movement will they pick this up? Is it our job to expose them to it? I will put it in my library and try to promote this and other similar books through a display or by talking to teachers about using it in their curriculum...we'll see.
This was an interesting story of how Benny Goodman teamed up with Teddy Wilson and others to form the first interracial Jazz band. The writing was a bit weird for me...back and forth and a lot of name dropping that unless you follow Jazz, Swing, Blues you wouldn't know. I will be putting it in my library but I am not sure how much circulation it will get unless I market it with other books about musicians or during African American History month???
Arcturus Betelgeuse Chambers loves astronomy and believes that someday he will communicate with living beings on Mars. But he fears his dreams will fade away when his family has to move to Las Vegas where light pollution will interrupt his view of the planets and stars. Before the family moves, however, Arty meets "Mr. Death" his new next door neighbor. Arty finds out that his neighbor is really an astronaut and they share a lot of the same interests. But when his neighbor gets sick Arty loses hope again. Can Arty keep his dreams alive?
This was an interesting book. It was a quick read for 240 pages and the characters were interesting. I liked it.
When Joey was walking home with friends after a day at the skateboard park an earthquake hit. The friends got separated with Joey and Fiona on one side of a collapsed overpass and Dylan and Kevin on the other side. The kids have to help each other out and then try to find out what happened to their own families.
This was a pretty good book. Good lead up to the earthquake and good action during and immediately following. It tapered off after that. It is good for what it is...a simple disaster book. This would be good for younger readers.
Interesting....can't find a picture or even a blurb on Amazon about this yet. The book If is similar to David Smith's If the World Were a Village and If America Were a Village in that he takes statistics about population, history, etc and brings them down to a scale that is easier for children to relate to.
I have the other books in my library. They haven't gone out much but I also haven't promoted them as much as I could. I wonder what would happen if I did...the facts in all of them are fascinating. I can imagine math teachers getting a kick out of the scale.
I liked the book.
Shelby, her mom, and her brother Brian are bequeathed an old house upon the death of Aunt Amelia. Soon after they arrive the children discover a mysterious dollhouse that is an exact replica of the house. In addition they find a doll graveyard. Shelby also find a notebook written by a very angry young girl. The dolls don't stay in the dollhouse and they don't stay buried. Shelby hears them talking and they want revenge and they want her to find the missing doll Lady.
This book had some really good parts and my kids who like scary stories will probably enjoy it. I just felt something was missing. It felt a bit disjointed to me for some reason.
