Saturday and Sunday

I was able to do quite a bit of reading the last 2 days.  Of course reality comes back tomorrow...back to work.  The first book I read yesterday was The Fantastic Family Whipple.  The premise was good.  The Whipple family is all about breaking world records.  Arthur is a bit of a  disappointment though and hasn't broken a record yet.  But when things start to go wrong it is up to Arthur to figure it out.  Is it a family curse, the new neighbors, their chef?  One would think at 368 pages there would be some answers but.......wait for it....no, no answers.  Obviously a sequel will be coming.  Not sure if my students would take the time to plow through this let alone wait for an equally long sequel.

This one was much better.  Eel finds himself in the middle of the worst cholera outbreak in London's history.  Together with Dr. Snow he must piece together the timeline of the epidemic, try to find the cause, and hopefully stop the spread.  This historical novel is based on the actual evens of the cholera outbreak in 1854.  There was some good action, adventure, and mystery.  I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

Okay...not so much.  There was very little action going on and then when there was (a landslide) it was over way too easily and quickly.  Sorry....

Pearl is a member of the Makah tribe in the Pacific Northwest.  Her tribe is known for whale hunting but when her father dies and the whales are being overhunted by big ships her people's way of life is threatened.  Can Pearl keep the traditions alive while navigating a world that wants her to "assimilate".  The was a very good story told with a lot of respect for the native culture.
